Cranberry sauce is a staple in our house on Thanksgiving. I tried many recipes, looking for the perfect blend of sweet and sour, without tons of added sugar. This recipe seems to do just that: by mixing the tartness of the cranberries with the sweetness of cooked apples, it achieves a fine balance that seems to work. With the health benefits of cranberries, it may be just the relish we need this year.
Cran-Apple Sauce
Sweet apples complement tart cranberries in this favorite holiday dish
Ingredients
- 8 oz fresh cranberries (1 bag)
- 3 medium apples, washed, chopped If organic, do not need to peel
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 cup pineapple fresh or frozen
- 4 Medjool dates, pitted
Instructions
- Blend the dates in the water and add to a cooking pot.
- Add all the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir frequently so does not burn.
- Turn off heat when apples are soft and cranberries have burst.
- Mash with a potato masher until desired consistency (like applesauce)
- Serve warm, room temperature, or cool.
- Store in sealed container in refrigerator for up to a few days.
I made this recipe last year for Thanksgiving and it was a huge hit! Thank you!
